Self-Acupressure Technique

Acupressure is a kind of self-massage that promotes healing and balance in the meridian and organ systems. The meridians, sometimes called pathways or channels, distribute along the legs, feet, arms, hands, torso, back, face and ears. It is important to remember that the meridians actually begin inside the center of the internal organs (spleen, stomach, kidney, heart, liver, etc.), exit into the body cavity and make contact with various tissues and glands, to finally reach the most external surface of the body: the muscles and skin distributing out to the hands and feet or all the way to the head. When the acupuncture point is activated either through self-massage or an acupuncture needle, healing information is sent to the local tissues, the glands, or the internal organs.

Point Activation

  • Use your finger pad, tip or nail, consider using one of the massage tools shown below, or be creative and think of another way to activate the points. Doing certain exercises like yoga also opens the meridians regulating internal organs and glands.

  • Pointer tool technique is also called ‘pressing.’ With this tool, pressure is placed directly into the point. It is helpful to make slow, small circles or movements, concentrating on moving into the point rather than across the tissue. Pressing into the point with the fingernail is very activating.
  • Scraper tool technique is used to activate a muscle grouping, body area, or to join a sequence of points together. Scraping away from the body releases energy; scraping towards the body gathers energy.

Timing

With acupressure, less is more.So do fewer points in total number, but massage each one of them longer. You will certainly see quicker results.

With your finger or a pencil eraser use pointer technique to make 200-300 small circles. This should take 2-3 minutes. I know it sounds like a lot of circles, and it is! But it only takes a few minutes and it becomes a great time for self-nourishment and self-care. It might be wise to include deep, abdominal breathing at the same time to allow the treatment to reach the full distance of the meridian-organ system.

This three-point combination of points helps to relax the body, circulate blocked tension, ease the mind and calm the spirit.

Liver 3:

Circulates the energy to create smooth and even functions of the body and mind. Harmonizes emotions and improves implantation.

Large Intestine 4:

Works together with Liver 3 to fully circulate qi throughout the body. Enhances receptivity.

Pericardium 7:

Located on the wrist crease just above the palm, this is a very strong point to harmonize and calm emotions. Strong fluctuations in emotions are considered a cause of hormonal imbalance.
